The Lighthouse at Strandvilla

In the year 1796 the lighthouse at Strandvilla was set up and was increased to 24 meters in 1819. Thus it got a height of about 30 meters above sea level. The lamp system was modernized at the same time, so that the reach of about four kilometers on more as 30 kilometers extended. The picture is from this time. Memel`s lighthouse was one of the first at the northeastern coast of the Baltic Sea. Merely the lighthouses of Danzig and Travemünde were older.

"100 steps lead to its viewing platform, which offers a wonderful panorama: The vista across the forest, reaching far to the north, to the south the greenly embedded town, the "Couronian lagoon", and more to the west the "Couronian spit" with its "Südermole" at the end, on the right the "Nordermole" with the white lighthouse and finally behind this, the sea which completes the entire image with character and contents. (One may ask for the admission to the tower in the attendant's residential building)."

Führer durch Memel und Umgebung
Issue 1905:

On the road to the lighthouse shortly before it on the right stands the inn "Restaurant Strandvilla". Highly to recommend is its seafront café with an observation terrace, which offers the most splendid view of the wide sea and the by forest surrounded Couronian lagoon. There might so easily be hardly a point, which to the visitors offers this combination of the ocean's massive strength with the kindly smooth run of the inland water.
