The roots of the Luisengymnasium can be found in the Latin School which probably already developed at the reformation time. About 1815 Memel's mayor Forster supported untiring the promotion of Memel's school system, and he also effected, that this Latin School or 'Große Stadtschule' was raised to the "Höhere Bürgerschule". The 1860 founded humanistic high school for boys pursued the tradition of this former Latin School. In 1891 the new school building in the Töpferstrasse came into its duty. By approval of the king the school now may be called Luisengymnasium. |
