The laying of the foundation stone for the church at the eastern end of the "Marktstraße" was on May 14th, 1696 and the inauguration for the church service was carried out on January 18th, 1706. Though, the interior work was 1709 completed, and the steeple eventually was finished 1710. A thorough renovation, and the steeple's upgrading were carried out 1790.


The St. John's Church before the big fire in 1854.

By the big fire, which began in the evening of October 4th, 1854, also the St. John's church was destroyed.


It was newly erected 1856/58. The 75 meters high steeple could be completed not before 1864. The altarpiece by Bouterwieck "Christ on the mount of olives" donated Friedrich Wilhelm IV ., he who also took responsibility for the side aisles, for the gable and the turrets. The two wood sculptures "Christ" and "Moses" which stood on the right and on the left of the altar were created by Alberti.
