The northernmost settlement of the Curonian spit is the village "Süderspitze". Its development of course was possible, after sufficient sand masses were washed up by the sea. And in addition by the erection of the "Südermole", which offered a relatively safety to hold the sediments. The first building at "Süderspitze" was a fort to the protection of Memel, for which a building plan 1782 was already designed. On base of this it should get the peculiar shape of a fastened log-cabin. 1791 it was executed with little changes. This first fortification 1866 became improved to a modern fort. However, it was not longer in use as a fortress already since 1897 . The old fortress is offering a dreamy, picturesque sight now.
