The buildings of the former "Altersheim" (old people's home) as well as the "Handwerkerheim" craftsmen's home (at the right edge of the picture) in the "Bahnhofstraße", now "S. Nėries g.", are still existing. Johannes Sembritzki reports: "Wilhelm Pietsch's Handwerkerheim was opened in the Bahnhofstraße in September 1904. 5000 Mk. were collected already, for to erect the close situated old people's home for female persons. Then a call was passed on September 4th, 1900. The site was given by the city free of charge. The building costs amounted to 60 000 Mk., the inauguration was 5th October 1912." |
