In the 2nd half of the 19th Century some of Memel's wealthy citizens built magnificent mansions. The house of the Privy Counselor of Commerce Heinrich Gerlach was erected in Neo-Renaissance style - the fashion of those time. A remarkable feature of the building is the asymmetrical designed front with the balcony, its four Corinthian columns bear the ornate pediment. |

Heinrich Gerlach has been up to his death in 1912 over 27 years the chairman of Memel's merchant guild. He instigated e.g. in 1907 to extend the construction of the chamber of commerce center building - the so called Börse - which in Memel already existed since 1857*.
