The construction of a mole at the end of the Curonian spit started in 1847.
On the topographical map from 1868 its modest length is to be seen. An extension started in 1900 to counteract the danger of permanent silting of Memel's harbor entrance. Up to the first World War it was completed with about 500 meters length but merely makeshiftly.
