Between the first and second World War primarily the elementary school system was promoted. The old schoolhouses performed their purpose only insufficiently. Ballastplatz- and Ferdinandplatz-school, Bommelsvitte- and Sandwehr-school had very large catchment areas in the northern part of the town, although they were still useable but burdened by overstaffed class rooms. So the great Kantschule rised up as a showpiece of municipal building of schools then in a central and quiet location, condignly aside higher educational institutions. With its exemplary gymnasium, the broad corridors covered with green linoleum, and the classrooms aligned towards the schoolyard, it was a gem within the developing area around Kantstraße, Johannes-Schirrmann-Straße and Wiesenquerstraße.
