On his death in 1862 the merchant Julius Ludwig Wiener bequeathed very considerable legates for the town and Memel's merchant guild. The sum of 28 000 Taler was for the erection of a home for impoverished merchants. The merchant guild committee had to manage that sum with the purpose to use 8000 Taler for the making of the building, and to use the interest of the remaining 20 000 Taler for its maintenance. Already next year the building has been erected on Libauer Straße 8 and could be used. It contains twelve apartments.
