The Holzstraße and the English church.
| ||||||||||||||||
The Anglican English church was inaugurated on August 2nd, 1863 in the Holzstraße no. 7. This already was too late to fulfill its purpose because the English families resident in Memel either had moved away or had assimilated themselves. The sailing ships became superseded by steamers, and the duration of stay in the port decreased so that the sailors as church visitors also were missed. The church was deserted already after about 20 years and was finally taken over by the evangelical church for the port district. |
