Johannes Sembritzki's explanation of the origin of Bommelsvitte's name is:
Winrich v. Kniprode domiciled his 'Witinge' in the area north of the Dange river in 1365. Later the area was divided into the 'kleine Vitt' or 'Vitte', the 'grosse Vitt' and the 'Bommels-Vitt'. So Sembritzki assumed that the place name is due to these 'Witinge'.
Gerhard Willoweit contradicts this and he justifies, that the Hanseatic League named its branch offices in Scania - Southern Sweden - "Fitte". These were fishery storages located on the shore, and served the sale of the captured fish. So Willoweit rather believes in such an origin of the name 'Bommelsvitte' (which once belonged to the estate 'Groß-Tauerlauken' of the Bommel family) particularly the more so as the fishermen's dwellings were located in Bommelsvitte until 1944. Bommelvitte's fishermen could moore their boats at the fishing port close to their homes.
