The so-called "Mittelschule" was a type of schools between primary school and higher school. In 1855/56 two schools of that kind became established in Memel. These were the 'Park-Mädchenmittelschule' and the Altstädtische Knabenmittelschule. In the year 1913 the Altstädtische Knabenmittelschule became extended with six additional classrooms. There was a auditorium, a classroom for physics lessons, classroom for drawing and a handicraft room too. The latter even was equipped with joiner's benches. Unfortunately, a gymnasium was missing, however. Up to the first World War the "Mittelschulen" had nine classes. I.e. school beginners were led up to the secondary school leaving certificate here. First after the war the four-year-old people elementary school got obligatory for everyone. So the "Mittelschule" had six classes now. Last principals of the "Altstädtische" were Mr. Dammerdeich and Mr. Stumber. Both these schools had been very popular. Lastly were 26 classes with more than 800 pupils there. |
