The semaphore station was set up on the northern embankment of the Nehrungsfort in 1902. It consisted of a tall wooden pole with four movable signal wings on both sides one upon the other, and with ring-like elements with rotatable indicators, also fastened to both sides. With these indicators the wind direction was shown of Libau (L) and Brüsterort (B). The wind speed was readable by the position of the signal wings fastened at the main mast.
The semaphore staff received the current weather data transmitted by telegram. The advertisement was updated three times a day.
Up to the second World War the semaphore towered above the coastal profile of Süderspitze as a far visible landmark. In good weather the weather data could be read from 6 to 7 miles of distance. The captains of the ships anchoring in the winter port also had an unfettered view of these important signal facilities.
