Viktor Kittel and Helmut Berger (the archivist of the "Working Group of the Memelland Districts" (AdM.) could find two inhabitants of Klaipėda, a German and a Lithuanian, which had documented everything about the destruction of the graves after 1945. With their help the groundwork of the former cemetery walls could be found. A documentation was made, and became presented to the "Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V.".
After the municipal authority of Klaipėda had assigned its approval, the cemetery became re-established by the Volksbund. It could be inaugurated and presented to the public on August 2nd, 1998. |
